Another Victory for Mark Cavendish
The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider won the eighth Tour of Britain stage of his career after beating Elia Viviani and Steele Von Hoff to the top spot after four hours 45 minutes 42 seconds in the saddle.
Following Sunday’s disappointment when Cavendish was unable to contest the final sprint after he was boxed in, Wednesday saw the Manxman helped towards the finishing straight by team-mate Alessandro Petacchi. Petacchi, a former nemesis of Cavendish’s, was brought into the Omega Pharma-Quick Step to act as the Briton’s main lead-out man before he is reunited with Mark Renshaw next season.
Wednesday’s stage winner was quick to praise his Italian team-mate. “We’ve been rivals a lot of my career but he’s a really good guy. He’s settled in very quickly to this team,” Cavendish said. “Obviously the Tour of Britain is my home race but he was a big factor in me coming here because I wanted to ride with him.”
